What it is

Certificato Casellario Giudiziale

A criminal record (or judicial record) is a certificate issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office, which records the criminal, civil and administrative measures already taken against a person.

Purposes and Validity of the Certificate

The Certificate of Conviction can be requested both in Italy and abroad for various purposes, such as participation in competitions or tenders, adoption, recruitment, application for a residence permit or citizenship.

Often the certificate is requested for use abroad, in which case it must be apostilled (if the country of destination is a signatory to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961) or legalized by the foreign representation of the country from which it is requested.

Our agency can also provide a certified translation of the certificate in any language.

The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

Difference with the Certificate of Pending Charges

The Certificate of Criminal Record In Italy is often confused with the "Certificate of Pending Charges", which is always requested at the same court office, but the two certificates do not contain the same information.

While the General Certificate of Pending Charges reports all judgments issued by any court in the territory of Italy (it therefore has national value), the Certificate of Pending Charges reports whether there are any pending proceedings in the individual court where the request is made.

For this reason, many courts indicate that the applicant is not resident in the province of the court itself.

As a general rule, unless a specific request is made to a specific court for a Certificate of Conviction, when a Certificate of Conviction is requested both in Italy and abroad, reference is made to the "General Certificate of Conviction" (the same as the "Certificate of Conviction" abroad).

Application documents for the Request

The Certificate of Criminal Record can be requested only by the holder or by a person authorized by the holder, by submitting the following documents:

  3. power of attorney for the application and collection (will be provided by us)

Time frame for the issuance of the Certificate

The Certificate of Criminal Record can be issued through the urgent procedure or through the normal procedure:

  • Normal procedure: 5/7 working day from request
  • Urgent release: 1/2 working day from request

NOTE: The above timeframe does not include days for mailing and may be longer if the applicant does not send the requested documentation in time. If an Apostille stamp is requested, more days will be needed.
